HeroBook ("we," "us," or "our") operates the HeroBook mobile application and the website at herobook.org. HeroBook is a personalized storytelling app designed for children under 13, managed entirely by their parents or legal guardians.

We are committed to protecting the privacy of children and their families. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and applicable data-protection laws.

2. Information We Collect

All information is provided by a parent or legal guardian during the onboarding process. We do not collect information directly from children.

• Parent information: first name, last name, parental role (e.g., Mom, Dad, Grandparent), and email address.
• Child information: first name, birth month and year, and family role (used to personalize stories to the child's age and family context).
• Device and app context: device model, platform (iOS or Android), operating-system version, app version, screen size, network type, locale, timezone, anonymous app identifier, session identifier, and IP address for security and rate limiting.
• Usage and diagnostics: first-party product interaction events (such as screen views and story progress), crash or error reports, and optional push notification token if a parent enables notifications.

We do not collect precise geolocation, photos, contacts, or any other sensitive device data.

3. How We Use Your Information

• To personalize stories based on the child's name and age.
• To communicate with the parent about their account (e.g., service updates).
• To improve the app experience through first-party analytics and diagnostics.

4. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.

We use first-party analytics only. We do not integrate third-party analytics SDKs, advertising networks, or social media trackers in the app.

We use privacy filters in our analytics and error-reporting pipeline to avoid storing parent names, child names, birth dates, email addresses, or push tokens inside diagnostic metadata.

We may share data only when required by law or to protect the safety of our users.

5. Data Retention and Deletion

We retain your data only for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services.

You can request deletion of all your data at any time by using the "Delete my data" button available in the app's Profile screen, or by contacting us at [email protected]. We will process deletion requests within 30 days.

6. Parental Consent and COPPA Compliance

HeroBook is designed to be set up and managed by a parent or legal guardian. We require parent or guardian setup and consent before collecting any information associated with a child.

• The app includes an age gate that prevents children under 13 from completing onboarding independently.
• Only the parent enters information; children interact only with stories generated from parent-provided data.
• Parents can review, modify, or delete their child's information at any time through the app or by contacting us.

7. Data Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) for all data in transit and secure storage for data at rest. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify parents of material changes by email or through a notice in the app. Continued use of HeroBook after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
